This text attempts to review the most recent opinions and developments in surgery and guides the reader to some key references where more detailed considerations might be sought. The references selected have been drawn wherever possible from the more commonly available journals. Many are review articles rather than papers reporting original work. In addition, several chapters in recent books have been quoted. In this third edition, the selection of topics is again based mainly upon areas of current controversy in surgery. The number of topics has been greatly increased reflecting many of the recent advances in surgery since the second edition was published in 1982. The chapters on percutaneous nephrolithotomy, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, transluminal angioplasty and monoclonal antibodies are just a few examples of new topics included in this edition. However, all chapters nave been revised to include recent changes in surgical practice. This book is intended mainly for the postgraduate student preparing for the FRCS examination but it will also be of interest and help to senior medical students.
