The Association's July 1999 annual conference at St. Albans pivoted on the theme of St. Albans and the Cult of St. Alban. Of the 22 lectures delivered, 18 are represented here. They explore the origins and setting of the cult of St. Alban from its beginnings in Roman times to the restoration of the shrine in 1991-93. Most are concerned with the Romanesque and later church and its fittings, and do not cover the 14th-century shrine bases of St. Alban and St. Amphibalus, the rich collection of wall and vault paintings, or the production of manuscripts by Matthew Paris and the scriptorium. They are not indexed. Distributed in the US by ISBS. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
