Old English and Anglo-Latin text and manuscript studies have been a major field of research at the University of Munich ever since Helmut Gneuss became Professor of English Linguistics and Medieval English Literature at the English Department in 1965 ...It thus seemed appropriate to celebrate Helmut Gneuss's 90th birthday with a symposium on "Anglo-Saxon Micro-Texts", held at the University of Munich on 3-4 November 2017, in appreciation of his inestimable contributions to Anglo-Saxon studies and English historical linguistics as a collector, compiler, author, reviewer, bibliographer, research and mentor ... The present collection comprises many of the papers presented at the symposium ...

In 16 essays, many from a November 2017 conference in Munich, medievalists explore Anglo-Saxon micro-text beyond manuscripts; scribal engagement in manuscripts; from scribbles, glosses, and mark-ups to text; and Old English and Anglo-Latin poetry. Among their topics are practical runic literacy during the Late Anglo-Saxon Period: inscriptions on lead sheet, two micro-texts in AElfric's Catholic Homilies: a puzzle revisited, the Old English dry-point glosses, encyclopedic notes as micro-texts: contextual variation and communicative function, discrepancies between Caedmon's Hymn and Bede's Latin rendering of it, and whether the Hymnus trium puerorum is an unrecognized poem by Wulfstan of Winchester. In this volume, scholars from different disciplines – Old English and Anglo-Latin literature and linguistics, palaeography, history, runology, numismatics and archaeology – explore what are here called ‘micro-texts’, i.e. very short pieces of writing constituting independent, self-contained texts. For the first time, these micro-texts are here studied in their forms and communicative functions, their pragmatics and performativity.
