Alan Garner was winner of both the Carnegie and the Guardian Award for "The Owl Service" in 1968, and his "Stone Book Quartet" was awarded the Phoenix Award in 1996.
Alan Garner was born in Cheshire, where he still lives today. His first book, The Weirdstone of Brisingamen, was published in 1960. He was awarded the OBE for services to childrens literature in the 2001 New Year Honours list
