Gottfried (Center for Computing Technologies, U. of Bremen, Germany) and Aghajan (electrical engineering, Stanford U.) gather extended versions of selected papers from a 2009 workshop on Behavior Monitoring and Interpretation (BMI), reflecting emerging interest in the topic of well-being in disparate fields. In addition to papers from the workshop, the book includes other invited articles covering major research in the field, especially from the research community investigating intelligent means for BMI. Part 1 reviews foundational principles of well-being, with details on the use of ICT to enhance well-being among older people, and philosophical observations on the use of pervasive computing for supporting well-being. In part 2, ways to support well-being through care taking in smart environments are described, such as the use of tracking systems for smart home residents and an orientation system for patients with dementia. Part 3 presents work on improving well-being through lifestyle and entertainment, describing more adaptive and user-centric smart home applications. The book is illustrated with numerous b&w photos and diagrams. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
