This second and final volume of letters documents the period during which British novelist Scott (1920-78) was writing his best known work, the Raj Quartet, 1966-75, then continues the few years to his death. The quartet looks at the end of British rule in India from a perspective of dissent. Haswell (English, Texas A&M U.-Corpus Christi) has selected from his many letters those that reveal most about his life as a working author and his creative process, but includes many that reveal the positive or negative impact of people and conditions on that process. His frequent abbreviations are listed and expanded, a chronology is provided, and recipients and subjects are indexed separately. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
