This volume outlines an evidence-based, comprehensive, integrated approach to the treatment of bipolar disorder: a psychosocial approach meant to supplement standard psychiatric care and medication management. It describes background on and the features of bipolar disorder, theories and models, diagnosis and treatment indications, and treatment involving structured, directive therapy that is collaborative and client-centered, with discussion of considerations like managing suicide risk, substance misuse, and medication nonadherence. This edition incorporates new research on psychosocial treatments and clear medication management guidelines. Annotation ©2017 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)

An extensively updated new edition of the acclaimed guide to treatment of bipolar disorder, incorporating the latest research on psychosocial treatments and clear medication management guidelines.

This extensively updated new edition of the acclaimed book integrates empirical research from the last 10 years to provide clear and up-todate guidance on the assessment and effective treatment of bipolar disorder. The expert authors, a team of psychotherapists, medical practitioners, and researchers, begin by describing the main features of bipolar disorder based on DSM-5 and ICD-10 criteria. Current theories and medication management guidelines are described, along with decision trees for evaluating the best treatment options. They then outline a systematic, integrated, and empirically supported treatment approach involving structured, directive therapy. Special considerations, including managing suicide risk, substance misuse, and medication nonadherence, are also addressed. This compact, stand-alone resource aims to help psychotherapists, psychologists, medical and psychiatric practitioners, and nurses deliver the highest standards of care for people with bipolar disorder.

Recenzijas

"Patients with bipolar disorder often do not receive evidence-based treatments. The mainstay of treatment has been almost exclusively pharmacotherapy. However, there is empirical research over the past 10 years that shows [ the] effectiveness of psychosocial treatments in bipolar disorder. Unfortunately, this has not been translated to the bedside or office setting. This [ book] provides a comprehensive evidence-based approach to providing a supplemental psychosocial treatment program to these patients. Written and edited by nationally recognized clinician-researchers in the field, this is a welcome addition to the psychiatric literature.";Michael Joel Schrift, DO, MA, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, in Doody's Book Reviews, April 2017 ; "I would recommend [ this book] to all psychotherapists and any health professional that treats bipolar patients. ; The book is divided into 4 main sections. The fourth and last section is Treatment, which I found the most useful. ; [ M]ost helpful is the Appendix at the end of this book. I really appreciate practical, helpful forms, and I find that Bipolar Disorder provides them."; Vivian Chow, MD, Private Practice, Toronto, ON, Canada, in Medical Psychotherapy Review, vol. 25, 2018
