In its medieval beginnings was formed as an elite within the Church, created for the sole purpose of ending all religious deviations and placed under the authority of the popes. From then until now, the Holy Office has come a long and winding road being frequently used by politicians for their own purposes unrelated to the founding purposes. This has shaped the reality of the Inquisition, its mission and function.
