In this entirely new collection of the Mark Schultzs worksmost of which have not been previously publishedthe Xenozoic world takes center stage. Schultz presents preliminary drawings and concept designs from his upcoming Xenozoic graphic novel, placed in context with an introductory text. Plenty of poster-style images featuring his famed characters Jack and Hannah are included as well. Carbon 3 also features images from Schultzs Storms at Sea and his depictions of myth and pulp adventure. The inclusion of preliminary drawings along with the finished results provides insight into the decisions the artist makes in the process of moving toward the realization of his initial idea. Beyond his stunning use of brush, ink and graphite, there are examples of Schultzs continuing development as a painter working in watercolor and gouache.
Carbon 3 represents two years of challenges and development in Schultzs work, as he continues to strive to better realize and communicate his vision of human engagement with a largely unknown and always exciting universe. The works found inside this volume are all important markers along his road toward that goal.

Mark Schultz loves a good story and always has. His lifelong interest in the sciences and natural history led him to create the award-winning Xenozoic Tales and co-create the undersea adventure SubHuman, as well as to write such nonfiction works as The Stuff of Life, a Graphic Guide to Genetics and DNA. Schultz also has illustrated the collection Robert E. Howards Conan of Cimmeria and the autobiography of Charles R. Knight as well as his own novella Storms at Sea. Currently he is working on a new Xenozoic adventure.
