This book draws on quantitative research using national surveys and surveys carried out by the Indian Institute of Dalit Studies in New Delhi to examine 10 areas where exclusion based on caste and religion is most visible. The areas are human development, inequality, poverty, educational attainments, child malnutrition, health, employment, wages, gender, and access to public goods. In each of these areas, the study shows, high-caste Hindu households performed the best, and households from the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes--along with Muslim households--performed the worst, even after controlling for non-group factors that might have influenced the outcomes.
