Editors Trovarelli and Fornasiero present this volume on select catalytic applications of cerium oxide derivatives, with a focus on nanostructured derivatives and TEM characterization. The volume begins with characterization of crystal structures, electronic properties, and phase diagrams of ceria materials. The structure of current catalytic systems, oxygen storage and release properties, and nitrogen oxide conversion uses are discussed, followed by modeling and synthetic engineering of nanostructural features. The last half of the book focuses on achieving fine-tuned properties with commercial applications, covering briefly a long list of synthetic strategies with more detailed information on constructing catalytic sites for the water gas shift reaction, gold-ceria catalysts, catalysis of soot combustion, solid oxide fuel cells, biomass transformation, and air pollution remediation. The book follows the 2002 edition of Catalysis by Ceria and Related Materials, which was the first book entirely devoted to ceria and its catalytic properties. It covers fundamental and applied aspects of the latest advances in ceria-based materials with a special focus on structural, redox and catalytic features of nano-engineered systems. In addition, it presents recent advances of traditional large-scale applications of ceria in catalysis, such as the treatment of emissions from mobile sources (including diesel and gasoline engines).
