This Element offers the first detailed study of Catharine Trotter Cockburn's philosophy and covers her contributions to philosophical debates in epistemology, metaphysics, moral philosophy, and philosophy of religion. It not only examines Cockburn's view that sensation and reflection are the sources of knowledge, but also how she draws attention to the limitations of human understanding and how she approaches metaphysical debates through this lens. In the area of moral philosophy, this Element argues that it is helpful to take seriously Cockburn's distinction between questions concerning the metaphysical foundation of morality and questions concerning the practice of morality. Moreover, this Element examines Cockburn's religious views and considers her understanding of the relation between morality and religion and her religious views concerning the resurrection and the afterlife.

This Element affirms the distinction between questions concerning the metaphysical foundation of morality and questions concerning the practice of morality. It examines Cockburn's religious views and considers her understanding of the relation between morality and religion and her religious views concerning the resurrection and the afterlife.

Recenzijas

'Ruth Boeker's monograph on Catharine Trotter Cockburn is very well constructed: accurate in its historical reconstruction and presentation of the intellectual contexts in which her reflections are situated, precise in its philological analysis, thorough in its examination of the primary literature, and convincing in its philosophical interpretation. For this reason [ ] I believe that Boeker's work is indispensable for anyone wishing to engage in the study of Cockburn's thought.' Studi Lockiani 'Boeker's precise and insightful analysis combines historical and philological attention with philosophical penetration. I believe that this volume can be rightly seen as a touchstone for future studies on Cockburn.' Emilio Maria De Tommaso, British Journal for the History of Philosophy
