Corporate Links and Foreign Direct Investment in Asia and the Pacific examines the impact of investment on trade in East Asia and the Pacific. Foreign direct investment has been growing at 14-15 per cent per annum in Southeast Asia and China over the last decade and has been a major force in East Asia's remarkable economic growth and industrial transformation.
This book complements material on sectoral flows of foreign direct investment among the Asia-Pacific economies by focusing on microeconomic issues of strategy, activity and behaviour of corporate investors in the region. It explores the role of corporate alliances and networks of Japanese and Chinese firms, as well as the role of investors from newly industrialising economies, in the relocation of production and trade within the region.
Major features: A detailed analysis of investment in key sectors, such as electronics and automobiles. Component sourcing, supply, production, assembly, marketing and distribution by: the overseas Chinese, extended family-based firms; the Japanese, large-corporation horizontal and vertical keiretsu; and the Korean, large-firm chaebol family business. The widening, multiplicity of sources of foreign direct investment including: increasing investment from Korea and Taiwan, as well as Japan, the United States and Hong Kong; dramatically increasing amounts of foreign investment into China; and corporate and economic policy implications for Southeast Asia on unilateral or subregional trade liberalisation, and inward foreign direct investment regulations.
