Pitzel describes linguistic creativity in spoken English as a lingua franca (ELF), focusing particularly on the relationship of idiom and metaphor. She does not consider ELF to be a reduced language system that impairs or handicaps speakers, but simply part of the diachronic development of language around the world, and as vital and creative as any other natural language. She is concerned both with the formal characteristics of linguistic creativity at the level of idiom, and with the communicative functions the idioms and metaphors serve in interactions. This book investigates formal characteristics and discourse functions of linguistic creativity at the level of idioms in spoken ELF as represented in the Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English (VOICE). Building on the findings of previous ELF research, the book proposes that creativity might serve as a fundamental concept in accounting for the variation that seems to be central to describing and understanding English as a lingua franca.

This series welcomes book proposals detailing innovative and cutting edge research and theorisation in the field of English as a lingua franca (ELF). The purpose of the series is to offer a wide forum for work on ELF, including aspects such as descriptions and analyses of ELF; ELF use in a range of domains including education (primary, secondary and tertiary), business, tourism; conceptual works challenging current assumptions about English use and usage; works exploring the implications of ELF for English language policy, pedagogy, and practice; and ELF in relation to global multilingualism.
