This book is for sex therapists, trauma focused therapists, religious focused therapists, and mental health professionals who wish to understand the culture of evangelical Christian purity culture so they can help clients from this population on their journey of healing.

In Deconstructing Purity Culture to Embrace Sexual Pleasure, certified sex therapist Andreya Jones explains how purity culture came to fruition and how its teachings have affected the sexuality and pleasure of generations of women. Women from this community often report difficulty with religious sexual shame, lack of sexual desire, pain during sex, and sexual dysfunction. This book focuses on how the messages of purity culture have impacted the ability of women to embrace their sexuality and pleasure. It provides guidance and tools needed to identify and evaluate beliefs and messages they received about sex, pleasure, and their roles as women so they can decide which of these messages and beliefs they would like to preserve and which they would like to change or discard. Included in this book is a seven-session psychoeducational curriculum that can be used with individuals or in a group setting. This book was written for therapists and mental health professionals who wish to understand and work with women in this population on their path of healing.

Recenzijas

Dr. Jones has compiled a great resource for therapists working with people who have begun to deconstruct their religious beliefs centered around sexuality and purity culture. Joness group curriculum covers all the main components from historical and generational, shame, guilt, patriarchal and misogyny, and more perspectives to help create a new sexual project for people who need to (re)discover their sexuality. Even though this is a group curriculum, there is plenty of space to make this book work well for individuals and couple work. This book is a must for any Marriage and Family therapist. -- Jay Mitchell, MA, LMFTA, private practice in Washington State Dr. Jones is not only a thoughtful and competent therapist, but her knowledge of purity culture and its effect on sexual health is insightful and informed. Her honest look at this widespread concern shines the light on how 'well-intentioned' ways of thinking and behaving within the church have resulted in significant harm to the emotional and sexual well-being of countless young adults. This is a book for therapists, their clients, and anyone who has any meaningful connection to purity culture ideology. This book provides hope, understanding, and solutions to move forwardout of a contrived cage and into the freedom of autonomous thought and behavior. -- Beneé Justice, PhD, LPC, CST, AASECT clinical sex therapist

About the Author

Andreya Jones grew up in a conservative, evangelical community in Papua New Guinea and Senegal, West Africa. She began her career in psychology as a case manager who worked with sexually abused children. After obtaining her masters degree in social work she worked with inner city teens and their families before entering the world of private practice. Andreya has a doctorate in clinical sexology, is a licensed clinical social worker, and is an AASECT certified sex therapist who owns a private practice in Pennsylvania. In the process of deconstructing from Christian evangelicalism and becoming the person she was meant to be she decided to devote her time and energy to helping other women who had similar experiences. She is passionate about helping clients navigate their relationships, sexuality, and pleasure. Andreya has the privilege of living with and loving her two rambunctious kids, bulldog, and wife.
