When a very sensible English girl decides to take care of the rhinoceros who arrives one evening, during dinner, with a bad cold, the great beast becomes her lifelong companion.

A classic story of a very special friendship, by the much-loved author/illustrator Edward Ardizzone.

Diana Effingham-Jones is a sensible child. So sensible, in fact, that she doesn’t panic when an escaped rhinoceros walks into the family’s sitting room one winter evening. So sensible that she doesn’t even panic when it’s discovered that the baby’s jacket is wrapped around the rhino’s terrible horn. While her father hides behind the sofa and her mother wails that the baby has become a rhino’s dinner, Diana discovers what’s really going on with the great beast. As fresh today as when it was first published in 1964, this droll and unexpectedly tender tale of an unusual friendship is beautifully rendered in Edward Ardizzone's wonderful watercolor illustrations.

4 stars - A classic story of a very special friendship, by the much-loved author/ illustrator Edward Ardizzone. www.bettybookmark.co.uk This unusual pet gives Ardizzone many opportunities to show off his draughtmanship. Spectator Ardizzone's instantly recognisable illustrations are every bit as soothing as the medicine Diana sticks down the rhino's neck. Families South East This classic book has a contemporary message as Diana proves to be a brave animal crusader who saves the white rhino from being shot and cares for him. Junior An unquestioning slightly surreal setting perfectly in order in the imaginings of childhhood. The reproduction is superb, far, far clearer and much more subtlety in the colouring than in my own first edition. School Librarian
