Proceedings of a conference at the Department of Astronomy, U. of Manchester, Dec. 1987. More than ten years after the last comprehensive review of this subject, Bailey and Williams present this overview, at the professional level, of many aspects of cosmic dust. Dust is an important component of the material between the stars, and it can be observed visually, in the ultraviolet, and the infrared parts of the spectrum. Dust plays an important part in star formation and is a major source of obscuration in galaxies. Fifty-five papers summarize the present understanding of the nature of cosmic dust. Observational data are reported and interpreted. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.
