Is car ownership reduced by the availability of public transport? This book reports on the varying results of studies in 17 urban areas in five countries addressing this important question. Hass- Klau (public transport systems/European urban transport, U. of Wuppertal, Germany) and European colleagues summarize the study sites and study results in narrative, tabular and graphic forms. They examine auto and transit usage patterns in the study sites in socioeconomic context and their policy implications. Maps show public transit routes in cities in France, the UK, Germany, the US, and Canada. The Volvo Research and Educational Foundations co- sponsored this research.
