Taking a socio-cultural perspective on teacher learning, this edited volume delves into cutting-edge research to generate both a holistic and an in-depth understanding of teachers’ classroom teaching in the English-Medium Instruction (EMI) context in higher education.

The eight chapters delve into EMI pedagogies across various disciplines, such as computing, design, history, applied linguistics, in different regions including Spain, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan. By examining actual classroom practices and the perspectives of both teachers and students, these chapters offer practical strategies for building disciplinary knowledge in EMI classrooms. They also explore the benefits and rationale of using translanguaging practices, incorporating students’ first language, and integrating technology into EMI teaching. Additionally, the book highlights the use of intercultural humour to enhance communication and learner engagement in multicultural classrooms. Xuyan Qiu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English and Communication of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Her research interests include second language teaching and learning, English-medium instruction, and English for academic purposes.

Rui Yuan is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education, University of Macau. His research interests include teacher education, critical thinking, and English Medium Instruction (EMI) in higher education. He has published extensively, with his work appearing in international journals such as TESOL Quarterly, Teaching and Teacher Education, and Studies in Higher Education. Dr. Yuan currently serves as an Associate Editor for TESOL Journal and is on the editorial board of Linguistics and Education.
