Unlike their account of the 1994 election of the European Parliament, the team of political scientists take a continent-wide rather than narrow French perspective to analyze what the 1999 elections revealed about the construction of Europe. They look at citizens and political elites, political forces, and voters and institutions. Appended are some 70 pages of data on electoral results by country, groups within the European Parliament, and maps. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
The European elections of 1999 highlight the liberation of the “European Question” from the old left-right conflicts. This electoral geography of Europe maps an increasingly diverse world of political opinion and commitment. The increasing strength of Green parties, the continued decline of European communism, and ethno-regionalism are some of the key issues that this book explores with the hope that Europe can begin constructing a real European public space within which a strong link to citizens can be woven.
Twenty years after the first democratic European elections, the 1999 elections are the occasion to take stock of the fifteen European countries' citizen's attitudes towards Europe, the state of political forces in Europe, and of the new emerging European institutions
