In her introduction the author identifies two types of exhibitions of African American art in American art museums--those curated with an anthropological approach that emphasizes Black art as distinguished from White, and those offering "...the corrective narrative, which aims to present the work of significant and overlooked African American artists to a mainstream audience." Cooks (art history, African American studies, and visual studies, U. of California Irvine) taps into a rich vein of tensions and anxieties as she documents such exhibitions and their reception and explores issues that continue to challenge art history, historiography, and American museum exhibition practices.
