In a textbook for an undergraduate course in fundamentals of theater or in theater appreciation, Fletcher and Irelan explain the steps needed to move a play from script to stage. They present many exercises to help students learn the mechanics by doing them. Their topics are what theater is; playwriting and types of plays; designers and the scenographic imagination; performer, director, and production dramaturg; seeing and writing about live theater; and outreach. The high price of most such textbooks discourage many students from taking the course, they say, so they have kept their book deliberately affordable. "Experiencing Theatre completely engages the beginning theatre student in the art of theatre. Students become playwrights, dramaturges, actors, directors, designers, adapters and collaborators though dynamic readings and excercises. This text gives them a great awareness of the work of being a theatre artist. Teachers have long strived towards creating these opportunities for their Intro students--finally a text that will make it happen." --Barbara Burgess-Lefebvre, Robert Morris University
