Rice cites what his collection is not--an authoritative history or cultural critique of Florida. Rather it is an alternative method for writing about space that allows personal and non-personal meanings to direct narrative at the level of pattern formation so that a variety of identifications might occur. 15 chapters are divided into four parts: Florida patterns; Florida narratives; Florida studies; Florida theory. The first three chapters exemplify the importance of pattern formation to discussions of space. The next four treat mood in their authors personal narratives. The next section connects the states physical features by tracing its canal system in West Palm Beach as also a system of political positions and attitudes.
