"This is a revision of the definitive text on home building by bestselling authors Edward Allen and Rob Thallon. It features the latest developments in the materials and methods of house construction, including energy efficiency, and a new chapter on small, multi-family apartment buildings. Organized in a logical, easy-to-follow format, it covers codes, costs, and management procedures, discusses building materials, and explores basic building systems. Profusely illustrated with over 1,250 drawings and photographs, this book includes new photorealistic illustrations that bring the text to life"--Provided by publisher.

Several chapters have been substantially expanded and revised in this text, including those on framing, windows, doors, and green building practices. The use of engineered materials receives greater focus and the glossary is much expanded. The text is practical in nature, with descriptions of materials and methods for their use accompanied throughout by drawings and photos. Lists of review questions, exercises, key terms, and references conclude each chapter. Both Allen and Thallon have taught architecture as well as designed houses and buildings.
