To celebrate forty years of publishing Resurgence ń the magazine at the heart of earth, art and spirit ń and forty years of the environmental movement, authors and contributors to the magazine were asked to reflect on the changes wrought during this period and the challenges humanity faces in the next forty years. In an inspiring collection that is both nostalgic and startlingly frank, many of the original thinkers and activists of our time discuss the state weķre in ń and how to get out of it.

Contributors include Deepak Chopra (ģI knew everything about medicine and almost nothing about healingī); Richard Heinberg (ģThere is a simple formula to avoid economic collapse: reduce oil consumption by 3% per yearī); James Lovelock (ģThrough our intelligence and communication networks, human beings are the nervous system of the planetī); and Anita Roddick (ģCorporations must shift their energy into making the world cleaner and fairerī). With an Introduction by Annie Lennox and a message of support from His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, this compendium sets the agenda for the future.

Other contributors include Jonathon Porritt, Caroline Lucas, Tim Smit, Richard Mabey, Geoff Mulgan, Michael Meacher, Alan Simpson, Jerry Mander, John Elkington, Vandana Shiva, Fritjof Capra and Scilla Elworthy.
Lorna Howarth, Satish Kumar and Sophie Poklewski Koziell are co-editors of Resurgence magazine. Satish Kumar is an activist and internationally renowned speaker on ecological issues. He has been a Jain monk, nuclear disarmament advocate and pacifist. Now living in England, Kumar is founder and Director of Programmes of the Schumacher College international center for ecological studies, and Editor Emeritus of Resurgence & Ecologist magazine.
