This book covers the latest updates to codes and standards in the energy industry, including content on energy auditing, waste heat recovery, utility system optimization, control systems, and more. The Eighth Edition features two new chapters on thermal storage, and Occupants’ Behavior and Energy Consumption in Buildings.

With new chapters on electrical system optimization and ISO 50001, this edition also covers the latest updates to codes and standards in the energy industry. Also included are chapters on energy economic analysis, energy auditing, waste heat recovery, utility system optimization, HVAC, cogeneration, control systems, energy management, compressed air system optimization and financing energy projects. Additional topics include emerging technologies such as oxy-fuel combustion, high efficiency burners, enhanced heat exchangers, and ceramic membranes for heat recovery as well as information on how to do an energy analysis of any system; electrical system optimization; state-of-the-art lighting and lighting controls. This reference will guide you step by step in applying the principles of energy engineering and management to the design of electrical, HVAC, utility, process and building systems for both new design and retrofit projects. The text is thoroughly illustrated with tables, graphs, diagrams and sample problems.

D. Paul Mehta, Ph.D., is a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Bradley University, as well as being the department chairman. He earned his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Iowa State University in 1979. He has more than 35 years of teaching experience and has initiated, developed, and taught several undergraduate and graduate courses in energy engineering. He directed the graduate program in mechanical engineering at Bradley University for 18 years. His research interests include applications of control theory to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems and to manufacturing processes for the purpose of reducing energy consumption. He has published numerous research papers in that area. Dr. Mehta has also directed the Industrial Assessment Center at Bradley University since 1993. Under this program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, Dr. Mehta has assessed about 400 small- and medium-sized manufacturing plants for energy efficiency, waste minimization, and productivity enhancement. He is an active member of ASME, ASEE, ASHRAE, and AEE.

Albert Thumann, P.E., C.E.M., is currently Executive Director of the Association of Energy Engineers. A 13-year veteran of the Bechtel Corporation, he has had extensive hands-on experience in engineering, project management, construction, start-up, and operation. His project involvement has included supervision of multi-million dollar projects in the pharmaceutical, refinery, chemical, pulp and paper, and fertilizer industries. Other books authored by Mr. Thumann include Project Management for Engineering and Construction, Lighting Efficiency Applications, Handbook of Energy Audits, Energy Management Guide for Government Buildings, Introduction to Efficient Electrical Systems Design, Optimizing HVAC Systems, and Plant Engineers' and Managers' Guide to Energy Conservation. He is listed in Who's Who in America, and is a member of AEE, IEEE, NSPE, ASA, and ASAE. He holds a MSEE and MSIE from New York University.
