The conflict between England and France in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries never ceases to fascinate. This stimulating edited collection, inspired by the Problems in Focus volume originally published in 1971, provides a fresh and accessible insight into the key aspects of The Hundred Years War. With chapters written by leading experts in the field, based on new methodologies and recent advances in scholarship, this book places the Anglo-French wars into a range of wider contexts, such as politics, the home front, the church, and chivalry. Adopting a sustained comparative approach, with attention paid to both England and France, The Hundred Years War Revisited provides a clear and comprehensive synthesis of the major trends in research on the Hundred Years War.

Concise and thought-provoking, this is essential reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students of medieval history.

Recenzijas

From the introduction, which contains a succinct summary of the main events and historiographical issues of the Hundred Years War, and through each successive chapter, this thematically arranged volume is an indispensable resource for scholars and students seeking an accessible guide to one of medieval historys most memorable military conflicts. * Maya Soifer Irish, Rice University, USA * This impressive collection brings together recent scholarship on the Hundred Year War in a form which is accessible to both students and teachers. It balances French and English perspectives, and complements the focus on traditional themes such as politics and chivalry with innovative work on topics such as the war at home and first-hand experience of the war. * Richard Cust, University of Birmingham, UK * This new volume is a worthy companion to Kenneth Fowler's outstanding collection of 1971, which introduced two generations of scholars to key themes in the history of the Hundred Years War. It will be required reading in my seminar on the subject. * Clifford J. Rogers, United States Military Academy, West Point, USA * This volume will be immensely useful to introduce students to the work of previous generations of historians, expertly sketching out and contextualising commonly agreed insights but also throwing light on scholarly disagreements and newly emerging areas of research.
