The Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) gathers datathrough the sensor nodes from an area of interest andthen processes it. The performance of WSN is,however, constrained by limited energy supply, requirement for collision free channel access and lowbandwidth. This book focuses on the network layer ofthe OSI model and investigates some of the existingcluster-based hierarchical protocols. One of theproblems of the existing algorithms is that thegenerated clusters are not uniformly distributed. Moreover, the optimum number of cluster formation isnot guaranteed. We have proposed a hierarchicalcluster-based algorithm called Iterative ClusterFormation (ICF). ICF forms the clusters iterativelyand ensures a more uniform distribution of thecluster heads. ICF manages to control the placementof the cluster heads and guarantees an optimum numberof cluster heads. ICF pursues a hierarchicalclustering scheme which lowers the number

ofhigh-range transmission. Simulation results show thatICF performs better than the existing cluster-basedprotocols in terms of reducing the energy dissipationand increasing the network lifetime significantly.
