Study conducted on the Bangladeshi school students in the United Kingdom.

The field of Linguistics is relatively new in Bangladesh and there has been no book published here on this topic. Even in the U.K. where this research was conducted, very little work has been done on Bangladeshis, and none at this level by any Bangladeshi. This is a virgin field in both countries. Since the teaching of English as second language is gaining importance in Bangladesh where bulk of the learners are low socio-economic status learners, it relates quite closely to the situation here.
This book is based on a research conducted in schools on low socio-economic status Bangladeshis studying in the U.K. It looked into their low academic achievement and the learning effect that different kind of classroom settings and teaching methods have on them.
The general belief among educators and others is that learning with native speakers in a second language situation leads to better learning of the second language by all nonnative speakers. The study has proved this to be wrong in the general sense, showing that learning with others of their own background can lead to better learning provided certain positive factors prevail. The value is of to theoretician and applied linguists who are interested in the how and what makes people learn; to organisers of education who have the responsibility of deciding how education should be conducted; to educators and trainers of teachers who deal with students like those in the research; to people interested in conducting classroom research; and even to the parents of the group who need to have some awareness of the problems and their solutions.
