International case studies discuss and illustrate libraries designed and built from the late 1990s to the present in order to demonstrate multi-directional strategies to stave off extinction and maintain and even strengthen this institution as it enters the digital world. Each set of examples illustrates one aspect of the design process: the building type and its emergence, planning and spatial organization, technical requirements, interior design and equipment, national libraries, large public libraries, small public libraries, and university libraries.
