Surprisingly little is known empirically about the use of literature in language education. Despite the popularity of literature, claims for its value rest more on speculation and assertion than on real understanding of the contribution it might make to greater language proficiency or language education more broadly. This book carefully details what is known of the language of literature, the reading of literature, and the uses of literature in language education, including assessment and curriculum, and in developing intercultural competence. Key studies are highlighted for what they tell us as well as for questions they leave unanswered. The book also incorporates pointers towards the kind of research now needed and practical guidance on how it might be carried out, as well as resources available. For this second edition, all sections have been substantially revised and updated to reflect the latest developments in the field.

Recenzijas

This second edition of Literature in Language Education is a welcome update to the previous version with some good additions to the original publication. it is an important contribution to the field and remains faithful to the principles devised by the series editors . the book will stimulate further research and informed pedagogic innovation in the field and motivate teachers to conduct a theoretically informed reflection on the roles of literature in language education. (Christina Lima, ELT Journal, Vol. 71 (4), October, 2017)

In Literature in Language Education, Geoff Hall provides an overview of current research into how literature has been and is being used in second language education and also outlines areas for relevant research projects in the future. Teachers looking for an action research project will find Literature in Language Education, 2nd Edition an invaluable resource; however, even those who are only interested in using literature as part of a second language class will find this book worth a look. (Paul Freeborn, JALT Journal, Vol. 39 (1), May, 2017)
