A richly illustrated and comprehensive introduction to the world’s sharks

Sharks are the top predators in many marine ecosystems. But tales of the killer instincts and fearsomely sharp senses of these hunters can obscure their full life histories. In fact, sharks are characterful, exhibit surprisingly complex behaviors, and lead secretive lives full of interest in every type of marine habitat. The Lives of Sharks is a fascinating and beautifully illustrated guide to these iconic marine creatures from two world-renowned experts. This book explores shark physiology, anatomy, behavior, ecology, and evolution, as well as conservation and the impact of human activity on shark populations. With stunning photographs and illustrations, as well as profiles of selected species, this is a comprehensive, authoritative, and inviting introduction to global shark life today.

Recenzijas

"[ An] enthralling book. . . . Lavishly illustrated with big color photos and drawings, the book covers shark biology, behavior and ecology in prose that's authoritative but highly accessible to anyone bitten by shark fever."---Ron Charles, Washington Post "[ A] landmark, myth-busting book."---Marc Bekoff, Psychology Today "Truly excellent."---David Gascoigne, Travels with Birds "[ A] wonderful new book packed with facts and information about these magnificent animals. . . . Whether you are studying marine biology, or just love these perfect predators, this book will be one that you pluck from your collection time and time again."---Nick and Caroline Robertson-Brown, Scubaverse "A thoughtful, easy read, suitable either for dipping into or working through, and would look good on any shark divers shelves."---Steve Weinman, Divernet "Many people experience irrepressible fear while swimming in the presence of sharks but exhibit deep interest in sharks when safely ashore. This text will satisfy the latter urge and may even mitigate some of the former concern."---S.R. Fegley, Choice "Every one of those pages has a story, and with its beautiful photographs and clear text the book is a must for anyone even vaguely interested in sharks or the ocean. This is a book for the desk not the shelf; each random dip inside will reveal a fascinating did you know nugget it will be a long-lived reference for amateur and expert alike."---Kelvin Boot, Ocean Challenge
