In this resource for general readers and patients with any form of dystonia, Truong, a neurologist, introduces medical terms and concepts with simple b&w drawings and plain language, then uses these concepts as building blocks for discussion on genetics and causes of dystonia, specific syndromes, and related anatomy and physiology. The book then covers pharmacological treatment, deep brain stimulation, coping strategies, and rehabilitation exercises. Vignettes from real patients illustrate the process from onset of symptoms through diagnosis and treatment. The book includes an annotated list of resources, and a glossary of anatomical terms, medical terms, and drugs. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

For the 85,000 people in the United States affected with cervical dystonia, information about the condition is hard to obtain. This comprehensive guide is for individuals with various forms of dystonia who don’t want the disorder to define them. Written by three neurologists who specialize in movement disorders, it covers diagnosis and treatment, rehabilitation exercises, and patient resources. Personal vignettes guide readers through the onset and progression of the disorder and help them make informed decisions about their medical care, diagnosis, and treatment.

Recenzijas

Living Well with Dystonia provides a balanced and easily understandable introduction to a chronic condition that is rarely discussed. Treatments and exercises are presented honestly - no miracle cures, but paths toward symptom relief. Simple diagrams of the nervous system and affected limbs or muscles are very helpful, and comments from actual patients personalize the discussions throughout. Well written. Recommended. -- CAPHIS Consumer Connections

""This book is a life-altering experience, easy to comprehend, the pictures of the disorder give you a clear insight.""-Robert Farmer, Former President, National Spasmodic Torticollis Association

""This kind of comprehensive guide to dystonia has long been needed. It will be an invaluable resource to patients, their families and caregivers.""-Bonnie Strauss, President and Founder, The Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia & Parkinson Foundation, Inc.

""Living Well with Dystonia is an extraordinary resource written by an extraordinary man. Dr. Daniel Truong has dedicated his professional life to the Dystonia community and we have been blessed by his dedication. Without his leadership, inspiration, financial and professional help there probably would not be a National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association.""- Larry Kolasa, Co-Founder/Past President, National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association

""Dr. Daniel Truong and co-authors have done a great service to patients with blepharospasm and other forms of dystonia by providing a clear and readable discussion of the disorders, their causes and therapeutic alternatives. Ignorance enhances fear and disability, whereas knowledge allows patients and their families to optimally adjust to chronic conditions, thereby improving their quality of life. This book should be read by all dystonia suffers and their loved ones.""-Mary Lou Koster Thompson, President, Benign Essential Blepharospasm Research Foundation""
