Analysis of the metaphysics of the Essais reveals a fundamentally negative conception of being. While the fullness of the writing does not ultimately compensate for Montaigne's doubt, the discourse nevertheless manages to lucidly probe the emptiness of being, offering ever-renewed intellectual challenge.
