The new series Manuals of Romance Linguistics (MRL), whose volumes will begin to appear in 2014, aims to present a comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview of Romance linguistics. It will comprise approximately 50 volumes that can either be consulted individually or used as a series of books providing a detailed overall picture of the current state of research in Romance linguistics. A special focus will be placed on the presentation and analysis of the smaller languages, the linguae minores, which the two older reference works of the discipline, Lexikon der Romanistischen Linguistik (19882005) and Romanische Sprachgeschichte (20032008), could not discuss in detail.
This handbook provides a comprehensive overview of the field of special languages in the Romance-speaking world. Languages for special purposes are used to express specialized information, and their syntax and vocabulary often differ from standard varieties and other styles. This handbook contains a separate section retracing the evolution of Romance languages for special purposes from the antiquity until today.
