With a business baseline focused on the impact of embedded systems in the years ahead, the book investigates the SPD requirements raised from existing and future IoT and M2M systems. On this baseline, it proposes a new approach to embedded systems SPD, the SHIELD philosophy, that relies on an overlay approach to SPD, on a methodology for composable SPD, on the use of semantics, and on the design of embedded system with built-in SPD. This solution fulfills the security, privacy, and dependability requirements of the IoT and M2M challenging scenarios and demonstrates a great potential impact on the SPD market of cyber-physical systems. The book explores new grounds and illustrates the development of approximately forty prototypes capable of managing and enhancing SPD, including secure boot, trusted execution environments, adaptable radio interfaces, and different implementations of the middleware for measuring and composing SPD. Furthermore, it presents results obtained by applying the methodology in four business areas: surveillance, railway, avionics, and social mobility. Additionally, the book includes case studies on Ansaldo STS, EUROTECH, Leonardo Company.
