The traditional core of seismic and ground deformation monitoring is discussed, along with more innovative techniques involving the recording of microgravity and micromagnetic variations, and the changing compositions of volcanic gases and liquids. The role of satellites is stressed, particularly with regard to the capabilities for measuring surface deformation, recognizing thermal anomalies and monitoring gas and ash plumes from space platforms. Christopher R. J. Kilburn is Professor of Volcanology and Geophysical Hazards at University College London. Bill McGuire is Emeritus Professor of Earth Sciences at UCL. John Murray is a volcanologist best known for his work on Mt Etna and other active volcanoes. He was educated at Magdalene College Cambridge, and is presently based at the School of Environment, Earth and Ecosystems, Open University, UK.
