The anthology was inspired by a symposium held in conjunction with the March 2001 exhibit Spirit of an Age at the National Gallery in London. Looking at such cultural productions as poetry, music, and architecture, scholars examine the contrast between and surprising overlap between calls for a German nation state and a vibrant Europe during the long 19th century.
