Unsworth's (English and literacies education, U. of New England, Armidale, Australia) text is derived from research papers presented at the National Conference of the Australian Systemic Functional Linguistics Association held in September 2006 at the U. of New England and focusing on multimodal texts and multiliteracies. Nineteen scholars in education, linguistics, and functional social semiotics from Australia and New Zealand examine the practical issues concerning computer-based information and communication technologies and the English curriculum from the early years of schooling through matriculation. The fifteen chapters deal with multimodal materials for early literacy pedagogy, multimodal semiotics and the changing nature of picture books for children, multimodal authoring and digital narrative in the middle years of schooling, issues in senior secondary school English teaching and the need for rethinking assessment in the English curriculum at all levels of schooling.
