Notables and Clergy in Mount Lebanon analyzes the relations between the Maronite notables and the Church in the context of socio-economic transformations in Mount Lebanon in the period 1736-1840. Special attention is given to the influence of external forces, such as the economic interference of the European nations, the Syrian and Ottoman administrative framework and the increasing involvement of the Vatican in the affairs of the Maronite community. The emphasis is laid on the role of religious foundations, of waqfs, in the process of social and economic integration, both within the Maronite community and in the wider frameworks in which it gradually became incorporated. These external and internal factors can explain the remarkable political emancipation of the Maronite Church, which assumed an important role in the history of Mount Lebanon in the nineteenth century.

This book analyzes the relations between the Maronite notables and the Church in the context of socio-economic transformations in Mount Lebanon in the period 1736-1840. Special attention is given to the role of waqfs and the influences of the Vatican and the central provincial ottoman authorities.

Recenzijas

'This study clearly and concisely shows the importance of endowments in the late Ottoman Empire and it adds to our knowledge of pre-modern Lebanon.' A.J. Abraham, Journal of Third World Studies, 1995. 'Ce livre est donc non seulement un ouvrage de référence essentiel pour tous ceux que s'intéressent ą l'histoire du Mont-Liban avant 1840, il concerne aussi tous ceux qui s'interrogent sur le foncionnement réel de la société et de l'économie ottomane de la fin du XVIe au début du XIXe sičcle.' Henry Laurens, Bulletin Critique des Annales Islamologiques, 1996.
