This book describes the history, development, current status of numerical weather prediction (NWP), in both operational and research modes, and various applications of NWP models, which have been made by the scientists in East Asian countries. In particular, it introduces the major contributions to the worldwide NWP community achieved by East Asian scientists, including parameterizations, data assimilation techniques, parameter optimizations, and applications of the NWP models to improve the forecasts of high-impact weather systems in East Asia. This book provides both research scientists and graduate students with basic knowledge and insights on the development of NWP in East Asia.

Seon Ki Park is Professor of Climate and Energy Systems Engineering  at the Ewha Womans University (EWU), Seoul, Korea; he established and served as the founding directors of two research centers at EWU --- the Severe Storm Research Center and the Center for Climate/Environment Change Prediction Research. He obtained a Ph.D. in Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma (OU) in 1996, then worked as a research scientist at OU, University of Maryland and NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center before he joined EWU in 2001. He has taught several courses at EWU, Chapman University (US), University of Torino (Italy) and the State University of New York (SUNY Korea),  including Numerical Modeling and Prediction, Data Assimilation, Hydrometeorology, Weather Analysis and Forecasting, Weather and Climate, etc.  His research focuses on storm- and meso-scale meteorology, hydrometeorology, and parameter estimation and data assimilation to improve numerical weather and regional climate prediction. He co-edited a series of editorial volumes, titled Data Assimilation for Atmospheric, Oceanic and Hydrologic Applications (2009, 2013, 2017, 2022; Springer); he also co-authored a textbook, titled Principles of Data Assimilation (2022; Cambridge University Press). He has been the main host and organizer of the Ewha International School on Data Assimilation (EISDA) since 2012.
