Operator splitting, a tool for simplifying complex time-dependent problems into a sequence of subproblems, has been used in many fields of numerical modeling. This work presents different theoretical and practical aspects of operator splitting. The book is intended for numerical modelers, engineers, and graduate students. It begins with an overview of the history and motivation of operator splittings, then offers a description and analysis of operator splittings. A separate chapter is devoted to numerical solution of the split sub-problems, and another to real-life applications. The research behind the book was supported by the Hungarian National Research Foundation and the Jedlik project ReCoMend.
