Once a curiosity to a few endocrinologists or rheumatologists, osteoporosis has become (during the past two decades) a major focus of investigators and clinicians in fields as diverse as mechanical engineering, pediatrics, and epidemiology. In this hefty reference, 70 contributions cover all aspects of the subject, including the effects of numerous genetic and environmental factors, structural and biomechanical underpinnings, ethnoepidemiology, cellular mechanisms, radiologic assessment, clinical descriptions, and therapeutics. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

The slide set includes 120 specially selected figures from Osteoporosis that fit easily in six 20-pocket vinyl pages. It is ideal for use as a teaching aid!

Recenzijas

A small number of excellent journals and textbooks on various aspects of osteoporosis are already available, but a textbook focused solely on this condition and encompassing this diversity of research has been lacking. This book does a terrific job of filling the gap. It contains 70 chapters grouped in six sections... All the chapters are authoritative and include up-to-date references... Osteoporosis is quite comprehensive; indeed, topics that typically receive brief treatment elsewhere (osteoporosis in minority groups and in men) receive entire chapters here... The book also covers relevant methodologic concepts, no doubt reflecting the editors desire to make the material accessible to readers with other primary research interests. --Anne C. Looker, National Center for Health Statistics, in THE NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE In this hefty reference, 70 contributions cover all aspects of the subject, including the effects of numerous genetic and environmental factors, structural and biomechanical underpinnings, ethnoepidemiology, cellular mechanisms, radiologic assessment, clinical descriptions, and therapeutics. --SCITECH BOOK NEWS This is a beautiful set of slides, designed specifically for teaching the subject of bone metabolism. The accompanying legends contain much information. The set is clearly made for both the student and the teacher and covers a much wider subject than the title suggests. --M. Laurence, JOURNAL OF BONE AND JOINT SURGERY The editors have managed to produce a work which is interesting, comprehensive, and up-to-date: each chapter has something new and important to say.... Whichever direction one chooses to approach this monumental work I predict that it will be worthwhile; I have consumed most of it piecemeal and could find no significant fault. Orthopaedic surgeons have little time to read, and a limited inclination to do so: but they are constantly dealing with the end results of osteoporosis. This book should be on their shelves and chapters read individually. --R. Smith in JOURNAL OF BONE & JOINT SURGERY
