In October of 2003, French lawmaker Bernard Accoyer introduced a bill intended to regulate the practice of psychotherapy, a bill that would, according to critics, bar psychoanalysts from mental health practice. Miller (psychoanalysis, U. of Paris VIII--Vincennes, France) responded to the passage of this law with his November 2003 open letter complaining about Accoyer's efforts to "compromise psychoanalytic discourse and enchain those who serve it." In addition to Miller's letter, this volume contains additional thoughts on the bill by British and Australian psychoanalysts Bernard Burgoyne and Russell Grigg.
