Linguists mostly of English, but of other languages as well, examine a range of cross-cultural and cross-linguistic communicative setting and provide insights into the role played by linguistic resources and discursive strategies in contexts where participants pursue specific interactional/transactional goals. Each chapter both illustrates pragmatic aspects of communication and shows their direct relevance to second or foreign language pedagogy. They cover handling multiple communicative goals in interpreting settings, interactional strategies in scholarly contexts, functional and phraseological patterns in scripted conversations, and context-informed pedagogy in the classroom.
