Scenes from an Island is the second monograph by Florence Montmare. This collection of photographs and texts was created between 2014 and 2021, during various stays at the Ingmar Bergman Estate on the Swedish island of Fårö. Divided into three acts, Montmares series examines the vulnerability of humankind and nature, as reflected in the climate crisis and global conflicts. Set against the dramatic island landscape, which already served Bergman as a source of inspiration and a backdrop for his films, islanders and refugees become protagonists in a photographic reflection on the existential issues of our time.
Vienna-born, Swedish/Greek/American artist Florence Montmare creates photographs, films, performances, installations, and commissions while exhibiting her work internationally. Her first monograph, America Series, was published by Damiani Books in 2023. Scenes from an Island is Montmares second monograph, and the work was created during multiple artist residencies at Ingmar Bergman Estate. Previous exhibitions include Martas Atelier, Gotland Museum (Sweden 2022), Scenes from an Island, at Fotografiska New York (2020-2021), at Helsinki Photo Festival (2020), and Bergmancenter Gallery (Sweden 2019); Illuminations at Ivy Brown Gallery (New York 2014, 2015) and It Happens in the Meeting (Sweden 2017). She was an artist in residence at Ingmar Bergman Estate (Sweden 2015, 2017) and is represented by Ivy Brown Gallery, New York. Florence Montmares work has been exhibited at Fotografiska, New York, FRAC Lorraine, Casino Luxembourg, Saarlandmuseum, Centre dart Contemporain du Luxembourg, and the Musée dArt Moderne et dArt Contemporain, among other places. Alumni of the International Center of Photography, she was part of the Chashama studio program (New York 2010-2012). She shares her time between New York and Sweden.
