The focus of attention in ceramic research is increasingly turning away from duplicative amassing and reporting of material and towards synthetic work. Those responsible for archaeological ceramics need to become familiar with terms and methods used by scientists, in order to judge whether possible applications of science are likely to be meaningful. This handbook sets out the range of information which might be sought by ceramic analysis, and gives broad outlines of the different methods of analysis. It will be a useful resource for all archaeologists, museums and conservationists.
