The eastern Mediterranean, between the 7th century BC and the 1st century AD, was a place where cultures both clashed and mingled. These twenty-one papers, from a symposium held in Mainz in 2001, look for evidence of this cultural interaction or reaction in religious artworks, especially grave monuments and cult offerings. The annotated and specialised papers, which are followed by numerous photographs of the objects discussed, consider, for example, Egyptian sculpture from Greek religious contexts, early Hellenistic paintings, Phoenician and Etrurian sculpture, animal sculptures, Phoenician and Punic works, sarcophagi from Carthage, Etruscan ssarcophagi and tombs in Sabratha. The majority of papers are in German, others in French, Italian and English (1).
