Documentarians Van Riper and Goodman portray the city of Venice at its most serene, during the winter months when Venetians have their city largely to themselves. In Goodman's black and white photos, Venice takes on a somber air, as if daily life were muted. The constant push of the sea to overcome the city is prevalent in these images, as is the determination of the Venetians to keep it out. Working, shopping, dining, marriage and death are all accomplished with the waters and the ancient buildings as backdrop. Van Riper's text, filled with both general information and personal memories, adds to the melancholy pleasure of the photos.
