In this textbook, the authors draw on their experience in teaching and researching in health and social care to show how sociological ideas can help understand changing patterns in health processes and outcomes.
Throughout, readers are encouraged to use their own observations, reflections and experience to develop an understanding of the applications of sociology. Practical everyday examples and questions and exercises are used to draw out on-the-spot applications. Key concepts and theories are introduced in a gradual, non-technical manner.
A central concern is to develop an understanding of the distribution of power in caring relationships and of the origins of social inequality. Sociological insights can empower both professionals and their clients to address inequities in health opportunities and in life chances. By working through this book, students and health carers will increase their understanding of caring work, professional relationships and the changing nature of health service delivery.

Encourages the application of sociological insights in health care. Health processes and outcomes are analyzed in this text in terms of social difference, inequality, opportunities and life chances. Key sociological concepts and theories are introduced by using practical exercises.
